The House of Art Tacheles…

…(Kunsthaus Tacheles) in Oranienbuger Straße in Berlin is not without reason the most colourful ruin of the city. It was named after an artist’s initiative, which in 1990 occupied a part of the building. They painted the facade colourful and built sculptures out of rubble lying around. The art, action, event and communication center Tacheles developed under the leadership of the newly formed Tacheles social club.

Inside the building many ateliers, exhibition spaces, metal workshops and even a cinema were housed. There was also a “Blue Saloon”, in which regularly concerts and readings took place. In the “Golden Hall” was a big theater stage on which well – known actors of the fringe theater scene have played.

Previously, there was, among other things, the Wertheim department store, but the building was partially damaged in the Second World War. Although after the War the building was used by the GDR, it was not rebuilt again.

After many problems regarding the financing and the security of the building it was finally completely vacated on 4th of September 2012. Today in Berlin – Marzahn you can meet some of the artists in their new location, the former “Magerviehhof”.

The House of Art Tacheles in Berlin is vacant to this day. However, you should look at it, if you are in Berlin Mitte. You can link it, for example, with a walk along the Oranienburger Straße, pass the New Synagogue to Hackescher Markt. The walk will be worth it, promised!
