The Neue Nationalgalerie is dedicated to painting and sculptures of the 20th century and generally to the art of classical modernism and the art of the 1960s. Priorities of the Neue Nationalgalerie are the German Expressionism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Surrealism and the American Colour-Field Painting. In addition, the art of the GDR is diverse represented there like in no other museum in Berlin in this extent.
The museum was opened in 1968 and, together with the Gemäldegalerie (Art Gallery) and the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Applied Arts) is one of the most important museums in the Kulturforum. The interesting building is the modern architectural realization of the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) on the Museum Island and with its glass main hall; it is eye-catching. The main hall is light-flooded and is designed for temporary exhibitions. Exhibitions of contemporary art are mainly shown there. In the spacious, but limited basement, you will find the permanent exhibition. Since the two-storey building has no capacities for more exhibit space, a large collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie is fragmentary issued and made available to visitors. Therefore, you can discover different permanent exhibitions at your visits.
After a period of continual use for more than 40 years, the Neue Nationalgalerie now requires renovation. During the necessary renovations, the Neue Nationalgalerie is expected to be closed in January 2015 for several years, so unfortunately you cannot visit the Neue Nationalgalerie.
However, you don’t need to be sad! From fjord hotel berlin is only about 500 meters to the Neue Nationalgalerie, where you will find yourself in the immediate vicinity of the Kulturforum.
